Back to School

It's that time of the year again. Our farm is gearing up for the fall season. But even more exciting than that… It’s back to school!

As a family-owned business, we believe there are several similarities between parenting and farming. Plants and kids both need care as they grow and mature into the best they can be. Parents, before you see the fruits of your labor, there's going to be weeds to wean out and storms to weather. 

In farming, plants may grow in better conditions than others. For example, squash can handle warmer weather much better than collard greens, which like cooler weather. The same goes for children in their growing environment, be it at home or in the classroom. Some kids need to get up and play, while others prefer quiet time to read or draw. Some kids learn by listening to an explanation, and others learn by completing the task.

Like plants in the field, children grow at different rates. Oftentimes in a field, we will see that the plants on the outside of the field are the smallest starting out. These plants may receive the least amount of water as pivots work to reach the last stretch of the field or have been missed by the plow when dropping into the field. There could be a million reasons why a plant is smaller than the one beside it, but as farmers, we do our best to ensure equal conditions for all our plants. 

We are farmers, but we are also a family growing our own children into the next generation. It takes patience, and pouring love over them like water over a sprout. Happy back-to-school to all the families out there. As farmers, we would be remiss to say we hope your kids “grow like weeds” this season…. Instead, we hope they grow like kale or cabbage or the other wonderful crops we grow!
